Event Description
Many have argued that environmental problem such as climate change cannot be resolved within the framework of a market economy. This argument features centrally in the claims of ecosocialists, who say that the only way to create an environmentally sustainable economy is to overthrow capitalism and replace it with socialism. This is often based on the claim that capitalism requires growth, and yet infinite growth within a finite ecosystem is impossible, and so the economic system must at some point break down. This presentation will assess the merits of this claim.
About the Speaker
Joseph Heath is Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the author of several books, both popular and academic, including Philosophical Foundations of Climate Change Policy (Oxford University Press, 2021), and Ethics for Capitalists (Friesen, 2023).
