The Consumer Choice Center and the Center for Governance and Society at King’s College London are happy to announce the call for papers for the 1st edition of a 2-day symposium on “The Governance Roots of the US Healthcare Crisis”.
The symposium will be organized at the Department of Political Economy at King’s College London, United Kingdom, on October 20-21, 2026.
This event will provide a global forum for path-breaking health economics research critical to public policy, private and public governance, and market and non-government mechanisms that create the conditions for healthcare competition and innovation.
We welcome abstracts and papers from various disciplines, including, inter alia, healthcare economics, healthcare management, applied philosophy (business ethics), political economy, political science, public policy, and public health. Attendees from both academia and policy practice are welcome to contribute to the discussion.
The symposium focuses on the US healthcare system from the interdisciplinary view of economics, public policy, business ethics, and political science. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

- Competition and entrepreneurship models
- The epistemology and incentives behind healthcare systems and policy practices
- The negative impact of price-setting policies on competition and innovation
- Comparative methods examining international and national models for drug pricing
- Comparisons of national provider systems with hybrid and private healthcare systems and drug prices
- Governance and policymaking: regulation, deregulation, top-down, and bottom-up approaches
- The Impact of Vertical Integration on Healthcare Provision Insurers
- Market Concentration in the Healthcare Industry

The deadline for abstract submission is July 15, 2026. The top ten papers will be accepted for presentation. Presentations last 45 minutes each. Conference stipends for travel will be available to all accepted speakers (up to $1,300 for travel) – Lodging and meals will be covered as well. The results will be announced within two weeks after the deadline. Accepted attendees will be asked to submit a full manuscript (max 5000 words) by September 15, 2026.
